At a time when gods and monsters were beginning to have to hide from humans and their fears, Pan fell in love with the nymph Syrinx. A discreet admirer at first, he ends up revealing himself to the young woman against his will. Frightened, she falls into the water. Pan dives in to save her from drowning, but all he brings back is a sheaf of reeds. Lost and guilty, he finally transforms them into an instrument that can be blown to produce music: the Syrinx, Pan's legendary flute.
